A publication telling the history of Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square, designed on a simple bet: if the layout is engaging enough, even a reader with zero interest in the subject will get pulled in.
The design balances readability with a sense of exploration. A clear heading hierarchy guides readers through sections, whitespace controls the pace, and visuals are placed to break up text so each page feels fresh. The palette complements the photography while adding energy to what could easily have been a dry historical document.
Outcome
Each page tells its own story while the system holds the whole publication together. The project shows how far deliberate hierarchy and pacing can carry subject matter that starts with no built-in audience.
